During November-December 2007, flash floods heavily affected Serbia’s southern region, causing great damage to property and forced the evacuation of several hundred residents to temporary shelters. This recent experience demonstrated that cooperation between local and republic authorities and a well-coordinated municipal disaster management structure is critical to quick and efficient disaster response and recovery. Vranje is one of the first municipalities that has joined the program and has already made advancement in emergency preparedness and planning on the local level, while the three new municipalities will be included in the program’s capacity-building activities from now on. With the addition of Vlasotince, Bojnik and Lebane, the Program will be working with 41 municipalities throughout Serbia on preparedness and planning strengthening.
Journalists interested in attending the signing ceremony are kindly invited to be at the Municipal Assembly building in Vranje, on March 27, 2007 at 11:45AM.
