Nine New Municipalities to be certified for "Enhanced Disaster Resilience"

On June 4, 2009, USAID’s Preparedness and Planning program will certify nine municipalities and towns for achieving ‘enhanced disaster resilience,’ in acknowledgment of their progress in improving disaster management capacity at the local level.  Michael Harvey, USAID Mission Director will present certificates to the mayors of the following nine municipalities: Arilje, Bečej, Medvedja, Sečanj, Sjenica, Vlasotince, Vršac, Žitište and Zrenjanin. Predrag Marić, Deputy Minister of Interior and Head of the Sector for Protection and Rescue and Zoran Jeftić, Ministry of Defense State Secretary, will address the audience at the event.

These nine municipalities have all successfully coped with landslides, flash floods, fires, drought, and environmental incidents in the recent past and have made progress towards improving their municipal disaster management systems.  All nine municipalities have passed the needed documents through municipal assemblies, an integral step towards increasing disaster management capacity, which qualified them for Level 1 certification.

To date, over 650 persons from 60 municipalities' Disaster Management teams throughout Serbia have attended USAID supported trainings in the areas of risk assessment, risk management, and planning methodology. These municipalities have participated in USAID’s Preparedness and Planning program for over a year and have benefited from capacity building training, technical assistance and networking events promoting best practices and the exchange of experiences in the field of disaster management.

USAID’s Preparedness and Planning program builds a sustainable and systematic approach to local-level disaster management and assists municipalities to meet legal obligations and international standards in disaster management and response.  Municipalities meeting these standards are certified as ‘enhanced disaster resilient.’ To date, 11 cities and municipalities have been certified for achieving Level 1 ‘Enhanced Disaster Resilience’ status. Currently, 60 Serbian municipalities are included in the program.

Journalists interested in attending the ceremony are kindly invited to be at City Hall, Belgrade, on Thursday, June 4, at 9:45 am.
