Increased Allocation of Funds for Disaster Managemen

In light of current difficult economic situation, one would expect that funds allocated for preventative measures and timely responses to disasters, in most municipalities in Serbia, would not be treated as a high priority and would have been an easy budget line item to cut. To the contrary, the Preparedness and Planning Team found that most municipalities have either maintained or increased their spending on preventative measures and / or reserve for relief and recovery assistance in relation to last year. This is a direct result of the program’s work with the municipalities in raising awareness of the importance of investing in disaster management on an ongoing basis.

Through certification and cooperation to enhanced disaster resilience

On June 4, 2009, USAID’s Preparedness and Planning program certified nine municipalities and towns for achieving ‘enhanced disaster resilience,’ in acknowledgment of their progress in improving disaster management capacity at the local level. Michael Harvey, USAID Mission Director, presented certificates to the mayors of the following municipalities: Arilje, Bečej, Medvedja, Sečanj, Sjenica, Vlasotince, Vršac, Žitište and the town of Zrenjanin.

JAS ‘Youth in Business’ Conference and JA Student Company Fair: Business of Love Takes Top Prize at Junior Achievement Serbia Finals

Twenty student company finalists competed for top honors on Wednesday, May 27 at a ‘Youth in Business’ conference sponsored by Junior Achievement in Serbia and supported by USAID's Preparedness, Planning and Economic Security (PPES) Program. The finalists were selected from over 100 student companies in 93 schools from throughout Serbia that participated in JA activities during the 2008/2009 school year.
The 4th International Agricultural Fair in Bujanovac

From April 28-30, over fifty agriculture companies and food processors exhibited at the 4th International Agriculture Fair in Bujanovac. The fair was organized by the municipality of Bujanovac, in cooperation with the Presevo and Bujanovac Development Agency (PBDA) and the Vranje Economic Development Agency (VEDA).

The 35th Construction Fair in Belgrade

The Belgrade Building Expo Fair is considered to be the largest specialized civil engineering event in southeast Europe. This year, held from April 22 - 26, the fair attracted over 1,100 exhibitors from over 30 countries which displayed a range of building related products and design and furnishing services to more than 70,000 fair visitors.
