On July 21, 2008, USAID’s Contingency Planning Program will certify the municipality of Kruševac for demonstrating “enhanced disaster resilience.” Kruševac is the second municipality in Serbia to be awarded such a certification by the Program in acknowledgment of the municipality’s progress in disaster management.
Mr. Danijel Dašic, USAID Field Office Manager, will present the certification to the Mayor of Kruševac, Mr. Dragan Azdejkovic, at Kruševac’s City Hall.
USAID’s Contingency Planning Program builds a sustainable and systematic approach to local-level disaster management. The Program helps municipalities be more resilient to crisis or disasters such as floods, wildfires, landslides, or chemical accidents. The Program helps municipalities meet domestic legal obligations and international standards in disaster preparedness. Those meeting these standards are certified as having “enhanced disaster resilience.”
Kruševac is one of the first municipalities to have joined USAID’s Contingency Planning Program. Within the recent past, Kruševac has successfully coped with landslides, flash floods, fires and environmental incidents by developing a cross-sector, civil protection model towards municipal preparedness that includes representatives of the business community, subject matter experts, republic-level institutions, civil society and individual citizens at the local-level. Based on that experience, Kruševac’s disaster management team has created an innovative model for emergency response and has consistently shown initiative in improving the municipal disaster management system. In accordance to the program’s certification standards, the municipality of Kruševac has achieved Level 2 certification, which implies increased disaster management capacity and institutionalization of disaster management capacity.
Journalists interested in attending the certification ceremony are kindly invited to be at Kruševac City Hall, on Monday, July 21, at 11:45.
